Santa Came Early...

For the past two years, my husband and some guys from our church have been involved with The Warriors Center ministry. Last year was the first year that Santa showed up (at midnight) with stockings filled with surprises.  This year the tradition continued with Santa, stockings, a Bible for each guy in the program and a home-cooked breakfast.  Thought you would enjoy this video taken Friday night/ Saturday morning by Tim Simpson from WREG.  Merry Christmas!

Thanksgiving Week

Collierville Square train
{Collierville Square}

When your family lives out of town, it makes your time together that much sweeter especially over the holidays.  My older sister's family came in town over Thanksgiving and I was pleasantly surprised at how "grown up" my nephews were at only seven and five.  We had gorgeous weather the whole week which we took advantage of by visiting several parks and the Collierville Town Square.  On Thanksgiving Day, we had a special visitor from the GPD stop by and eat with us like last year on Christmas Day.  I think we may have started a tradition with these special dinner guests!  And look how much the boys have grown since this picture was taken in the spring of 2011.  No more cabooses for them.  They're all about the big engine at the front and center.  At least we had some snuggle time at the end of the day as we watched our favorite Christmas movie and laughed at all the same parts.

Thanksgiving Past

82nd Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Parade
{82nd Annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade}

By the time Hello Kitty made her way down 6th Avenue yesterday morning, we were still in our pajamas eating breakfast by the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree in our warm, cozy house.  Watching on television brought back memories from four years ago when we were there in New York City braving the crowds and cold weather to watch the famous Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.  We spent the night before at a friend's house in Brooklyn so we didn't make it to the parade as early as planned.  Despite our late start, we somehow timed it just right to ride the subway with hundreds of All Star Cheerleaders who were on their way to perform.  It took us awhile to find a good viewing spot once we arrived so we took our time walking up and down the side streets until we saw a break in the crowd.  Luckily, a lot of families with small children were bailing mid-parade which meant we kept moving up all the way to the second row!  It was definitely worth it to see the parade in person - we had a blast!  And yes, the balloons are WAY bigger in person.  If we looked bundled up it's because it was freezing!  But that's to be expected in NYC... next time I would bring a thermos of hot cocoa.  Okay, maybe two =)

Coffee For Hope

I've already been to more fall festivals and merry marketplaces this year than last and this weekend I am headed to yet another!  And you need to know about this awesome opportunity to support my friend Jenny and her husband as they pursue adoption!  Jenny will be selling coffee at Christmas in the Valley this Saturday from 10 to 2 to help raise money to bring Baby T home.  Each 1 pound bag is $12 and comes in ground, whole bean or decaf.  I plan on picking up a couple bags for coworker gifts.  Wouldn't that make a great little Christmas happy?  I think so.  And I couldn't think of a better cause to support.  So go ahead and make some room in your schedule for Saturday morning and I hope to see you there!

Books Lately

I'm a sucker for a new book.  There's something about adding a new book to my bookshelf or discovering that beautiful coffee table book that makes me happy.  Sometimes I stumble upon a good find like a few days ago when I scored a vintage copy of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.  The bright orange hardcover reminded me of the beautiful clothbound children's books by Penguin Classics that make a statement on any bookshelf.  I love our two new cookbooks that we picked up on our anniversary trip so much so that I have my eye on this new cookbook available on October 30th!  And to balance all those cookbooks, I recently read an outstanding work by Russell Moore that I will be sure to revisit from time to time.

Two Sisters' Closet Sale

closet sale

It's been almost two years since we had our first closet sale, and it's time for another because our closets are packed!  Well, they were packed until we went piece by piece pulling out items for this year's sale.  We literally spent the entire day yesterday tagging and pricing items for Tuesday.  I think we have more items than we did last time!  We have hundreds of designer items including tops, tunics, dresses, sweaters, jackets, dress pants, jeans, shoes and handbags.  There are so many cute things that we were even trying to buy items from each other!  So I hope you can make it next Tuesday night and take advantage of all these cute clothes at great prices!  And the best part of this year's sale is that your purchases will help my little sister raise money for her 10 day mission trip to India next month!

Hummingbird Festival

ruby-throated hummingbird close-up
{Ruby-throated Hummingbird}

Local festivals always seem to fall on the weekend after Labor Day signaling the end of summer and the beginning of cooler weather.  With three different festivals on the calendar this past weekend, we decided to attend one that we hadn't been to before called the Hummingbird Migration Celebration & Nature Festival.  The festival was located at Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in Holly Springs, Mississippi which was about a 45 minute drive for us.  My favorite part was the hummingbird viewing and banding station where the hummingbirds were measured, banded and weighed and then released back into the wild.  I was amazed at how tiny the hummingbirds were up close!  Even with all their "fattening up" to prepare for their upcoming migration to Central America, they barely weigh more than a penny!  I sure will miss my two birdies that live in our backyard and drink from our hummingbird feeder.  Have a safe flight and I'll see you next year!
